  1. Early Childhood Education (Grades pre-K-2 or non-license option)
  2. Elementary Education (Grades K-8)
  3. Human Services Counseling
  4. Physical Education (Grades K-12, 7-12, K-8, or non-license option)
  5. Secondary Education (Grades 7-12)
  6. Special Education (Grades K-12)

2) What is a pre-major?

All students in the College of Education are initially admitted as pre-majors. Visit the following internet address for more information:
http://education.unlv.edu/Advising/Admission/DeptReq.html

3) What is the maximum number of credits I may take per semester?

Freshmen may take a maximum of 17 credits per semester. Sophomores, juniors, and seniors may take a maximum of 18 credits per semester. Summer term maximum credits are: Summer Session I allows a maximum of 3 credits, Summer Session II allows 6 credits, and Summer Session III also allows 6 credits. If you wish to enroll in a four-credit course, and a three-credit course in sessions II or III, an overload petition is not necessary. Students who wish to exceed the maximum number of credits during any given semester must petition for a credit overload. Petitions may be picked up in the COE Undergraduate Advising Center (CEB 226).

4) What is my class standing?

Class standing is determined by the number of semester credits which a student has completed:

5) How do I know which catalog I should follow?

You may follow the catalog of your year of enrollment in your baccalaureate-level program or your year of graduation. If you changed your major, you may choose the catalog of your latest change of major or the catalog of your year of graduation. Whichever catalog is used, it cannot be more than 10 years old at the time of graduation.

6) I am currently a UNLV student in a major other than Education. How can I change my major?

Please call our office at (702) 895-1537 to schedule an advising appointment. You must have a 2.75 GPA to change your major to Education. If you have above a 2.5 GPA (but below a 2.75), you may request to meet with the Director of the Undergraduate Advising Center for a possible exception.

7) What is a minor and do I have to have one?

A minor is an approved area of study requiring fewer courses than a major requires. A minor is not required.

8) Do transfer courses from CCSN and other institutions affect my overall GPA at UNLV?

No, your overall UNLV GPA is calculated based on UNLV grades only. However, transfer credits of C- and below are not acceptable into the Elementary Education program.

9) I received a low grade in one of my courses. What will happen if I repeat it?

Students are strongly encouraged to repeat any grades below "C." A student may repeat any UNLV course once at UNLV and not have the original grade computed in the GPA. Courses that are initially taken at UNLV must be repeated at UNLV in order to have the initial grade omitted from the computation of the GPA. (When a repeat course is completed more than once, only the original grade is omitted from the GPA).

10) How many hours of "study time" are required for my college courses?

In order to earn A's and B's, a typical student must spend twice as much time out of class (studying, writing papers, doing homework, making flashcards, etc.) as he/she spends in class. For example, a student taking 12 credits during a given semester spends approximately 12 hours/week in class. Therefore, it is recommended that he/she spend twice that amount of time (24 hours) studying and working on various course-related material.

11) I am a transfer student. My courses at my other school were on the quarter system rather than the semester system. How do I convert my transfer quarter hours to semester hours?

To convert quarter hours to semester hours, use the following conversion chart:

Quarter Hours Semester Hours
2 1 1/3
3 2
4 2 2/3
5 3 1/3
6 4

12) What does "withdrawal" mean?

Withdrawal is the act of officially leaving the University. Students may drop individual courses without withdrawing from the University, however, a "W" may be assigned to the UNLV transcript. Failure to attend class does not constitute a withdrawal. Students who do not officially drop will be assigned an F grade for that class. Final drop dates for individual courses may be located in the semester schedules.

13) Where can I get information on Financial Aid?

For information on Financial Aid, including information regarding the Millennium Scholarship, contact Student Financial Services (SSC 232, 702-895-3424).

14) What if I attempt to register and the class is full?

15) How may I obtain important messages and announcements from the College of Education Advising Center?

In addition to meeting with your advisor every semester, please periodically check the bulletin boards in the Carlson Education Building (most are located near the elevators). Also, the College of Education Advising Center will send you important messages and announcements via your UNLV e-mail address. You may activate your account at http://rebelmail.unlv.edu. We strongly encourage you to check your UNLV e-mail account on a regular basis.

16) Can a misdemeanor or felonious conviction affect my ability to obtain teacher licensure?

Misdemeanors or felonious convictions may prohibit teachers from obtaining licensure. Call the Nevada State Department of Education at (702) 486-6455 for details.

17) What is a practicum or field experience?

Every major in the College of Education has some type of practicum or field experience. Most teacher licensure programs contain more than one practica or field experience in which students go into a classroom for a specified amount of time each week. Usually, students present lesson plans and perform other teacher-related commitments. Majors which do not lead to teacher licensure also have some type of internship or field experience.

18) What if I am scheduled to graduate in August?

Since there is not a graduation ceremony in August, students may elect to participate in the May ceremony and complete their remaining courses in the summer. In order to walk prior to graduating, students must have a graduate application completed by the specific deadlines set by the College of Education, the Office of the Registrar and Admissions, and the Cashier's Office. For more information regarding the graduation ceremony, please call the Graduation Office at (702) 895-1799, or view http://commencement.unlv.edu.

19) How do I initiate my graduation application and apply for student teaching?

Once you have completed 90 credits, are in good academic standing, and are a full-major, you can initiate your graduation application through The Office of the Registrar and Admissions. This process takes approximately 3-4 weeks. The Registrar’s Office will provide you with a pick-up date for your application. Once you have this date, schedule an appointment with the COE Advising Center. If you are student teaching the following semester, you will complete both your graduation application and student teaching application with an advisor by the specified deadlines (October 15th for Fall student teaching, March 1st for Summer student teaching, and April 1st for Spring student teaching).
