Doctorate Programs - Ed.D. in Curriculum
and Instruction
Minimum Completion Requirements
The Doctor of Education Degree is awarded to candidates who complete
the following:
- Maintain an overall grade point average of 3.0 or higher for all
coursework taken at the doctoral level.
- Complete a minimum of 69 credit hours of study beyond the master's
degree as stated in the candidate's program of study.
- Complete the residency requirement for the degree through a structured
experience. The structured experience should be one that is related
to the student's program of study and goals for the degree. The
Program Chair and Committee members will meet with the student to discuss
and to refine the proposed experience. The final version of the structured
experience will include a rationale, procedure, and evaluation. The
student must file the "Approval for Ed.D. Residency Experience" form
with the Department of Curriculum and Instruction Graduate Office (room:
CEB 354).
The residency requirement for the Ed.D. will be satisfied through the completion
of a carefully supervised structured experience which may
include, but not be limited to a:
- social action project
- curriculum design and/or development project
- pilot study
- staff development project
- literature review in a related area
- custom-designed experience by the student and committee
- Pass a written comprehensive examination taken before advancing
to candidacy. (see General Information, page 38). Three credits of
dissertation hours (ICG 799) may be taken prior to advancing to candidacy
for the purpose of dissertation proposal preparation.
- Complete and successfully defend the dissertation. The candidate
must follow the guidelines set forth in the Guide to Preparing & Submitting
a Thesis or Dissertation available from the Graduate College (702-895-3320)
or online (http://www.unlv.edu/Colleges/Graduate/GSA/RebelHelp/).
- File the appropriate graduation forms with the Graduate College.
- File the original and two copies of the approved dissertation with
the Graduate College and one copy of the dissertation with the Department
of Curriculum and Instruction.
- In addition to the above, doctoral students are expected to attend
the C&I Doctoral Colloquium which meets monthly (Fall and Spring
semesters) throughout their program.
