Doctorate Programs - Ph.D. in Teacher Education

Entrance Requirements


1 Meet the requirements for admission to the Graduate College of University of Nevada, Las Vegas, as set forth in the UNLV Graduate Catalog.

2 Hold a master's degree from an accredited program in an area closely related to the chosen field of specialization. Normally, 18 semester hours in professional education are required.

3 Graduate grade point average of 3.0 or higher. *Please note that one third of the total program hours may be transferred from another accredited doctoral program.

4 Submit Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores for the General Exam. The scores should be sent directly to the Graduate College. GRE scores have a time limitation of five (5) years.

5 Satisfactory teaching experience, preferably licensed.

6 Submit three letters of recommendation from individuals who can specifically address the applicant's potential for success in the doctoral program. One of these letters must be from a university faculty member addressing your past academic success and future potential in the doctoral program. These letters should be sent directly to the Curriculum and Instruction (C&I) Department (see Contact Information herein)

7 Submit a letter of application to the Coordinators for Doctoral Studies of the C&I Department explaining, in detail: a) the reason(s) for pursuing the Ph.D.; b) expectations concerning the Ph.D. program; and, c) potential areas of study.

8 Submit a written statement of when the applicant plans to fulfill the residency requirement. Options for residency are listed herein (see page 23) and also in the Graduate Catalog under the College of Education listing.

9 Submit a scholarly writing sample to demonstrate writing proficiency.

The Coordinators for Doctoral Studies will screen applications to make sure the above criteria are met. Once that determination has been made, applicants will be invited to:

10 An interview that will enable applicants to demonstrate oral communication skills and to explore their commitment to continuing professional development. In addition to the above factors, it is desirable for applicants to have experience as a practitioner clinician in preservice or inservice teacher education program and experience in a professional development school or equivalent.
