POLICIES AND PROCEDURES FOR MASTER'S COMPREHENSIVE EXAMINATIONS

ELIGIBILITY FOR SITTING FOR EXAMINATION:

Students will meet with their advisors near the end of their coursework to determine when they will be permitted to sit for the examination. A general guideline is that a student has no more than six hours in progress. If all course work has been completed before taking the exam, students must request in writing that the "continuous enrollment" rule be suspended. The request is made to the Graduate College.

APPLICATION FOR MASTER'S COMPREHENSIVE EXAMINATION:

Students who are eligible for sitting for the examination must complete the department's application for taking the examination and meet with their advisors for approval. The form, APPLICATION TO TAKE M.ED.

COMPREHENSIVE EXAMINATION

must be completed and returned to the C&I Department's Graduate Programs Office three (3) weeks prior to the last day of instruction of the spring semester for August examinations and three (3) weeks prior to the last day of instruction of the fall semester for March examinations.

PURPOSE OF THE EXAMINATION:

Through the comprehensive examination, students will demonstrate depth and breadth of knowledge in their major emphasis of study. The examination will focus on the application of research and related theory to effective educational practice. The comprehensive examination serves as a culminating activity which provides students with the opportunity to synthesize knowledge and experience gained throughout their master's program.

CONTENT OF THE EXAMINATION:

The student will write on three questions which are comprehensive in nature. The major focus of the examination will be the area of emphasis of the master's degree. Master's core course content will be integrated into the three questions. While the general content of the exam questions will be discussed by the committee chair with the student, the student will not be privy to questions prior to the examination.

DATES FOR EXAMINATIONS and TIME ALLOTMENT:

Comprehensive examinations will be given the first Saturday in October and March each year. Students will have four hours to complete the exam.

EVALUATIONS OF COMPREHENSIVE EXAMINATIONS:

All comprehensive exams will be read by the student's advisor. The written exam will only show the student's identification number; no name will appear on any part of the answer to the exam question. The advisor will read and rate the questions independent of each other. The student must receive a "Pass" on all three questions. Students will be notified in writing of the results of the examination.

FAILURE / MARGINAL PASSING OF COMPREHENSIVE EXAMINATIONS

When a student does not pass (receive a 3 or higher on a 5 point scale ) all or part the comprehensive exam, the advisor will meet with the committee members and the graduate college representative to discuss one of the following options:
  1. The student must rewrite the entire examination after a three-month waiting period. The content of the questions will be decided upon by the advisor.
  2. The student has failed one or two questions and must write on the same comprehensive question(s) after a 3 month waiting period.
  3. The student's response to one or more questions was marginally passing. The student will meet with the advisor and graduate coordinators and clarify his/her response within 3 weeks of the examination. The advisor and graduate coordinators will make a decision at the conclusion of the oral exam and notify the student immediately of the results.

If a student fails the examination a second time, a request for a third examination will not be approved by the Graduate College
