ALTERNATIVE TO RESEARCH PARTICIPATION FOR GRADUATE STUDENTS:

If you are unable or prefer not to participate in research studies to meet all or part of the three hour research participation requirement in your course, the requirement can be met by preparation and submission of brief position paper(s).

    Directions:

      1. Position Paper(s)

To meet the research participation requirement you can prepare and submit an acceptable position paper on one or more of the three propositions listed below (each paper can count as one hour toward your research requirement.)

In your position paper you can either support or argue against the stated proposition. You are free to take either side and provide a logical and reasoned defense of your position. Your paper must include at least one reference in APA citation format. A typical paper will be 2 to 4 pages in length, double-spaced with a standard font.

      2. Propositions:

The propositions available from which to prepare your position paper(s) are:

A school district is considering requiring all teachers to complete at least one action research study in her/his classroom during each academic year.

The need for sound (strong) educational research justifies sacrifice of instructional time in public school settings in order to conduct the research.

Because UNLV describes its mission as a 'research institution', all UNLV students should be required to participate in at least one research study as a part of their university experience.

(choose one proposition for each alternative research credit and prepare your paper in support or against the proposition)

      3. Receiving Credit:

When you have completed your position paper (make sure you have followed the directions in #1), submit it as an email attachment to the Experiment Management System Coordinator. BE SURE THAT YOUR DOCUMENT INCLUDES YOUR NAME AND THE NAME OF THE COURSE TO WHICH YOU WANT THE CREDIT TO BE APPLIED. Also, be sure to retain a copy of the position paper for your records. You will be able to monitor the status of the submission (pass or no pass) through the Experiment Management System.

DEADLINE:

For the Fall 2009 term, submission of position papers must be completed by the last day of instruction (December 5, 2009).

Questions about the research requirement may be directed to the Experiment Management System Coordinator.
