Educational Leadership

The primary mission of the Department of Educational Leadership is the development of individuals for leadership roles at all levels of education and related business/industry enterprises. Its scope includes PK-12 Education Leadership , Higher Education Leadership , and Workforce Education and Development . Our Department offers several programs, many of which involve theoretical constructs and practitioner training for those interested in careers as public or private educational leaders, policy analysis, and teachers in business and industry occupations that require educational and leadership skills or degrees focusing on educational research.

PK-12 Education Leadership

Administrative Endorsement

For those educators who have already earned a Master's Degree, and desire to obtain Nevada K-12 administrative licensure, the Department of Educational Leadership offers courses that meet Nevada administrative endorsement requirements. A student may take graduate-level courses as a non-degree seeking student in PK-12 Educational Leadership. It provides the opportunity for students to take those necessary courses that lead to the State of Nevada Administrative Endorsement. All required courses for administrative endorsement are offered both on campus and online.

COURSEWORK TO MEET THE REQUIREMENTS OF NEVADA ENDORSEMENT AS A PROFESSIONAL SCHOOL ADMINISTRATOR (Effective July 1, 2002)

1. To receive an endorsement as a professional administrator of a school, an applicant
(a) Must:

  1. Hold a master's degree;
  2. Hold a valid license to teach in an elementary, secondary or special schools, excluding a business and industry endorsement;
  3. Have and submit to the department evidence of 3 years teaching experience in kindergarten or grades 1 through 12 in schools approved by the state; and
  4. Have completed at least 24 semester hours of graduate courses in the administration of a school, including:
    • (I) Administration and organization of a school: EDA 702;
    • (II) Supervision and evaluation of instruction: EDA 710/705;
    • (III) Development of personnel: EDA 750;
    • (IV) Finances of a school: EDA 720;
    • (V) The laws that apply to schools: EDA 755;
    • (VI) Curriculum: EDA 740/705;
    • (VII) Research: any 3 hour research course;
    • (VIII) Internship or field experience: 3 hours of EDA 705 attached to other courses as noted; and
    • (IX) Other courses considered to be part of an administrative program for educators: *EDA 701/705 plus 9 hours of other EDA courses; and

(b) Must:

  1. Have completed an additional 12 semester hours of graduate courses which may include other courses considered to be part of an administrative program for educators; or
  2. Hold a master's degree of higher in educational administration from a college or university accredited by a regional accrediting association.
2. An endorsement as a professional administrator of a school may be issued pursuant to a reciprocal agreement with another state if that state has been approved by the commission.

3. The requirements of subsections 1 (a) may not be fulfilled by independent study.

*EDA 701 is a prerequisite for all other graduate courses in educational administration.
