Overview
The undergraduate program in Workforce Education and Development offers a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Education with concentrations in secondary or postsecondary education.
The Workforce Education major provides students with options for two concentrations of study:
- Concentration I : Secondary Workforce Education & Development (middle and high school career and technical education (CTE) teacher licensure)
- Concentration II : Postsecondary Workforce Education & Development (community college & postsecondary institutions, training/HRD, and other adult education settings)
The Workforce Education Program is offered on the UNLV campus ( William D. Carlson Education Building ) and through Nellis Air Force Base. Since the majority of our students are working adults, courses are offered through a combination of evening and Saturday classes
.
Degree Requirements (B.S.)
Students majoring in Workforce Education & Development are required to complete courses in four areas of study:

UNLV General Education Core Requirements
UNLV general education core requirements may be satisfied through a variety of options: University of Nevada, Las Vegas; College of Southern Nevada; Community College of the Air Force; courses taken at other accredited institutions (transfer approval required); and CLEP/DANTES examinations.
Specific courses required for this degree and taken at other accredited institutions need not be repeated. All previously earned credits will be reviewed by a College of Education advisor, and a program which will satisfy degree requirements will be developed. Advising sheets indicating specific degree requirements are available by contacting College of Education advising Center at 702-895-1537.
College of Education Core Requirements
The College of Education core requirements include courses in educational psychology, student assessment, educational law, special needs learners, cultural diversity, etc.
- Concentration I: Includes 16 credits of College of Education courses
- Concentration II: Includes 13 credits of College of Education courses (See Advising sheets for details)
Workforce Education and Development Requirements
The Workforce Education and Development core requirements include teaching methodologies, curriculum development, working with special needs learners, computer uses in workforce education, workplace learning strategies, and integration of career and technical student organizations. In addition, the Workforce Education and Development program requires a supervised teaching experience. (See Advising sheets for details)
Teaching Field Requirements
All students enrolled in the Workforce Education and Development program must meet the requirements of an approved comprehensive or single-subject teaching field. Students in both Concentration I and Concentration II are required to earn a minimum of 30 (single subject occupational area) or 36 (comprehensive subject occupational area) credits* in their teaching field. Three years of verifiable work experience is required for most subject areas (work experience may be accrued during the duration of the degree program).
Generally, specific courses required to meet a student's teaching field are obtained through a combination of technical/occupational coursework taken at accredited institutions (e.g., CSN, TMCC, WNCC, GBC, etc.) and verifiable work experience. UNLV also offers excellent preparation in a limited number of occupational teaching areas (e.g., business, marketing, nursing). However, coursework in most of the occupational teaching fields must be taken at other institutions such as the College of Southern Nevada , which has excellent occupational programs and facilities. UNLV accepts transfer credits earned at other accredited institutions. Specific courses required for this degree taken at other accredited institutions need not be repeated. All previously earned credits are reviewed by an academic advisor and a program which will satisfy degree requirements is developed.
*Once a student achieves Senior standing (including 12 credits of the Professional Education Core), an individual's work experience in their trade area will be evaluated. Up to 30 semester hours of credit may be awarded based upon the skill level achieved, number of work experience years, and the nature of the duties performed. (See portfolio requirements for work experience credit)
A representative sampling of the trade area teaching fields that have been identified by the Workforce Education and Development Faculty and the State Department of Education are listed below. The career and technical education programs of study are broadly organized under six umbrella areas.
- Agricultural and Natural Resources
- Business and Marketing Education
- Family and Consumer Sciences
- Health Science Education
- Information Technology Education
- Trade and Industrial Education
Specific coursework requirements for each teaching field are available from the Workforce Education and Development faculty.
Business and Industry Teacher Licensure
The Workforce Education and Development Program also offers coursework for individuals interested in obtaining a Business and Industry Special teaching endorsement (based upon prior work experience) available through the Nevada State Department of Education.
