Advising Center - Meet the Advising Center Staff

The mission of academic advising is to assist students by collaborating with them in identifying and pursuing their educational goals, providing accurate and timely information, and promoting student responsibility and accountability for their academic success.

The staff in the College of Education Advising Center is excited to help you achieve your educational goals. Our full-time advisors meet with all education majors, while our graduate assistant academic advisors meet with Elementary Education majors. We look forward to meeting with you soon. Joyce Ahn Joyce Ahn, Director

Joyce is a native of South Korea. She is now a very happy Las Vegan, and appreciates the openness and the mild climate here. Joyce received both her undergraduate and graduate degrees in English from UNLV. Her interests include literature, history, old movies, ballet, Beethoven, and Bach. She also serves as managing editor of The Ben Jonson Journal.
   
Alison Chandler Alison Chandler, Senior Academic Advisor

Alison was born and raised in New England, but lived in the southeast since she was 16 years old. In 1997, she received her Bachelor's Degree in Sociology from Spelman College in Atlanta, and after taking several years off from school, earned her Master's Degree in Educational Psychology and Counseling from Tennessee Tech University in 2004. Alison began her career as an Academic Advisor for undeclared students from her graduate school alma mater soon after, and joined the UNLV College of Education Advising staff in the summer of 2007. Alison's hobbies include interior decorating, shopping, traveling, and spending time with her husband and twin daughters.

Monica grew up in Southern California and recently moved to Las Vegas. She is currently working on her Bachelors in Elementary Education. She joined the College of Education in May 2007. She enjoys watching soccer, traveling, shopping and hanging out with her family.
   
Ed Ronca Ed Ronca, Senior Academic Advisor

Ed moved to Las Vegas in August 2002 from Burnt Hills, NY where he taught and coached for 33 years. Ed received his Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education from SUNY Brockport and his Master's Degree from University Albany. He began working at UNLV in April 2003 as an Admissions and Enrollment Counselor in the Registrar's office. In November of 2007 he joined the College of Education Advising Staff. He enjoys watching football, fishing, exercising, reading, and playing Texas Hold'em.
   
Jan Rostron Jan Rostron, Senior Academic Advisor

Jan was born and raised in Arizona, but she spent past several years living in Utah. In 2005, she received her Bachelor's Degree in Business Information Systems from Utah State University. In 2008, she earned her Master's Degree in Instructional Technology, also from Utah State University. Jan began her career as an Academic Advisor in 2003 for undergraduate students at Utah State University and recently joined the UNLV College of Education Advising staff in the summer of 2008. Jan's hobbies include photography, singing, and spending time with her husband and 3 children.
   
Alexis L. Adams Alexis L. Adams, Graduate Assistant Academic Advisor
Alexis was born and raised in Indiana, but has attended schools on both coasts and overseas. In 2006, she received her Bachelor's in English Literature, with Certificates in Paralegal Studies, Business Foundations, and a Minor in Criminal Justice from Indiana University. Directly after her undergraduate career, she worked as a paralegal for the State of Indiana and began her Master's Degree in Public Health. Alexis relocated to Las Vegas, summer 2009 and began her graduate assistantship with the UNLV College of Education Fall 2009. Now as she becomes familiar with the beautiful views of the Las Vegas mountains, she will resume her loves of sketching, painting, shopping and traveling with her family.
   
Allyson Hallam Allyson Hallam, Graduate Assistant Academic Advisor
Allyson moved to Las Vegas at the age of 12 and remained here through high school. After receiving her bachelor’s degree in Sociology from California Lutheran University, she moved back to continue on to graduate work in the area of Sociology, here at UNLV. She is happy to be in an environment where she can help students succeed. When she is not working, Allyson enjoys watching movies, cooking and baking for her friends and family, and catching up on sleep.
