Tips for Graduates

CPC Intern Application Update
Applying to be a CPC Intern in Nevada:
The information on the Web site is http://marriage.state.nv.us/. The phone number is 702-486-7388. The application for Internship can be found at this website. The following is also required to complete the application:

  1. Three letters of recommendation attesting to the applicants qualifications/abilities to become a CPC sent directly to the Board at:
    NV State Board of Examiners-MFT & CPC
    P.O. Box 370130
    Las Vgas, NV 89137
  2. Application fee of $75 sent in w/the Internship Application.
  3. Students need to submit both Undergraduate and Graduate transcripts and have them sent directly to the Board (same address as above).
  4. Once the Board has received all of the required information, fingerprint cards will be sent to the applicant. These should be returned ASAP because it takes about 4-5 weeks to process. A $51.25 money order is also required and needs to be made out to the Department of Public Safety plus a copy of the student's Driver's License. The board suggests that students go to a Police Department to have Fingerprints taken and processed.

Final day to apply for graduation without a late fee
Graduation fee - $50
Thesis fee - $45 ($55 after 8/31/08)
Dissertation fee - $55 ($65 after 8/31/08)

Approximate costs of cap, gown and tassel package is $43.00, and the hood is another $33.00. Sometime in March there is a graduate fare with all the information you will need. For additional information the UNLV graduate student hotline is telephone is 702-895-3229

CED Comprehensive Exam Application is due February 15th, 2009 for May graduates, the link is http://education.unlv.edu/ced/pdf/Comprehensive%20Exam%20Application.pdf

All other forms such as proposed Degree Program and Appointment Advisory Committee should be turned in asap! Here is the link to those forms: http://education.unlv.edu/ced/forms.html

Even though there are two forms, there is only one exam, and that is the CED portfolio. Final 2009 Portfolio Requirements will be presented at the Comprehensive Portfolio Preparation Program on 2/4/2009 from 4-6 PM the Blue room, CEB 216.

Tips for graduate counseling students and new professionals

Counseling Today asked Gerald "Jerry" Corey, professor emeritus of human services and counseling at California State University at Fullerton, to share some keys to help beginning counselors establish a strong foundation for their careers. Corey provided the following tips, adapted from his Education Session "Is There Life After Graduate School?" which he presented to graduate students and new professionals at the American Counseling Association Conference in Honolulu in March.

One of the main points I try to leave students with is to have the courage to create a vision of the kind of personal and professional life they would like to have and then to work hard at making this actually happen. I encourage them to trust in themselves and not be derailed by any setback they may encounter, either academically or in their personal life.
