We are pleased to announce that the National Board for Certified Counselors' (NBCC) National Counselor Examination (NCE) will be offered to CED students on April 18, 2009 here at UNLV. The NCE exam qualifies students for National Counselor Certification (NCC) and is also a prerequisite for pursuing other NBCC specialty credentials including the National Certified School Counselor Credential (NCSC) and the Certified Clinical Mental Health Counselor Credential (CCMHC). Students may read about the many benefits of the NCC credential at: http://www.nbcc.org/whyncc
Please note that the recently passed legislation (AB424) for licensure of Clinical Professional Counselors in Nevada requires Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor (CPC) applicants to pass either the National Counselor Examination (NCE) or the National Clinical Mental Health Counselor Examination (NCMHCE). However, the NCE will be accepted only if the applicant provides evidence of having at least 3 years of work experience in mental health counseling, and effective January 1, 2010, only the NCMHCE will be accepted.
CED students eligible to take the exam in April 2009 are those graduating from our M.Ed. and M.S. programs in December 2008, May 2009, or August 2009. Previous CED graduates who would like to sit for the April exam on campus, must contact NBCC directly-- the department is not able to process their applications.
Applications are now available in the CED Office with Administrative Assistant, Ms. Yolanda Covington and they are due back to her by Friday, December 12, 2008. The cost for the exam is $295 -- NBCC requires payment via money orders only. More specific information about the exam is available in the application packets. Students are also encouraged to discuss the NCE exam and the various NBCC credentials with their advisors.
