Counselor Education

Human Services Counseling Minor

Students from other departments may minor in Human Services Counseling. The student will be broadly trained in understanding human behavior and in counseling skills to provide services in a wide array of contexts. The following courses are required for the minor: CED 300, CED 315, and a choice of five (5) courses from the following: CED 320, CED 325, COU 350, COU 360, CED 425, and RLS 450

CED 300
Introduction to Human Services and Counseling
Provides an introduction to the field of human services and counseling. Topics include various perspectives on human services and counseling such as: trends in human service delivery, counseling theories and practices, crisis intervention, intervention programs, and ethical issues. Prerequisite: ENG 101. 3 credits

CED 315
Counseling Skills in Human Services
Overview of basic counseling skills in the human services profession including: the history of counseling skills in human services; overview of the helping model; the therapeutic relationship in counseling; attending, listening, and understanding skills; empathy; probing and summarizing; reluctant and resistant clients; decision-making skills; and goal setting. Prerequisite: CED 300. 3 credits

CED 320
Drugs and Behavior
The objective of this course is to familiarize students with various classes of substances, substances' physiological effects, and substances' effects on behavior. Prerequisite: ENG 101. 3 credits

CED 325
Mental Illness and the Human Services Profession
Client-centered/cultural approach to mental illness as related to the Human Services profession. Prerequisites: ENG 101, CED 300, CED 315. 3 credits

CED 350
Human Sexual Behavior
Introduction to scientific information and research pertaining to human sexual functioning with an emphasis on dealing with sexual problems encountered by the human services professional such as sexually transmitted diseases, rape, incest and sexual abuse, sex and power issues, lack of education, and sexual functioning in the mentally ill and physically disabled. Prerequisite: ENG 101 or ENG 102. 3 credits

CED 360
Contemporary Marriage and Family Relationships
Analysis of historic and contemporary trends in marriage and family relationships in American society. Examination of major family processes through the life cycle, including functional and dysfunctional patterns and their interactions with individuals and communities. Prerequisite: ENG 101 or ENG 102. 3 credits

CED 425
Perspectives in Multicultural Counseling
Focuses on developing awareness, knowledge, and skills in working with culturally different individuals and groups. Substantial attention given to interpersonal issues, concerns related to different cultures, and programming in a variety of settings. Prerequisites: CED 300, CED 315. 3 credits

RLS 450
Administration of Recreation and Leisure Services
Comprehensive examination of the philosophical, legal, financial, and administrative foundations necessary for management personnel in public, not-for-profit, or commercial leisure service or organization. Prerequisites: RLS 150, RLS 200, and three credits in RLS 400 level courses. 3 credits
