The Journal for International Counselor Education (JICE) is a peer-reviewed scholarly journal that promotes professional counselor education, preparation, training, and supervision of counselors internationally. The principal goals of this journal are the development of global connections, the enhancement of counselor education competence, and the presentation of diverse perspectives as they relate to counselor preparation and competent practice worldwide. The journal features original research, theory, pedagogy, and practice oriented articles that reflect the diverse and growing population of counselors globally. Drs. Sterling Saddler and Nancy Sileo have agreed to serve as Interim Associate Deans for the College of Education
Dr. Sterling J. Saddler is an associate professor and chair of the Department of Educational Leadership. Dr. Saddler received a B. S. in Accounting from Tuskegee University, M.S. in Vocational Education from SUNY Oswego, and a Ph.D. in Workforce Education & Development from The Pennsylvania State University. Dr. Saddler is currently the Founder and Director of the Center for Workforce Development & Occupational Research at UNLV.The Center is committed to providing comprehensive workforce related resource services, professional development opportunities and research-based information, services and products, to the workforce and education communities. The Center has two main divisions of concentration; Training and Research .
Dr. Nancy M. Sileo is an associate professor of early childhood special education at the University of Nevada Las Vegas and has worked in the field of ECSE for more 17 years. Her current interests include early intervention, family involvement in special education, HIV/AIDS prevention education, and ethical issues in HIV/AIDS prevention education and special education teacher education. Dr. Sileo has been involved with teacher education special education for 12 years and currently serves as Interim Associate Dean for Academic Affairs in the College of Education at UNLV. In addition, she has been a member of CEC for over 16 years and is actively involved in TED and DEC. Dr. Sileo is author and co-author of myriad publications related to HIV/AIDS prevention education and research, as well as numerous publications in the field of special education teacher education.
Dr. William R. Speer Announced As Interim Dean for the College of Education
The Office of the Executive Vice President and Provost is pleased to announce that Dr. William Speer has been appointed Interim Dean for the College of Education. Dr. Speer is a Professor of Mathematics Education in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction at UNLV and most recently served as Associate Dean for Academic Programs and as the Co-Director of the Joint College of Sciences/College of Education/CCSD Center for Mathematics and Science Education. In making the announcement, Executive Vice President and Provost Neal Smatresk has expressed his confidence that Dr. Speer will provide the college with the leadership and continuity to progress during these critical times.
Dr. Speer is a past president of several professional organizations including the Nevada Mathematics Council (two terms), the Nevada Association of Teacher Educators (two terms), the Research Council on Mathematics Learning, and the School Science and Mathematics Association. He has served on the Mathematics and Statistics Advisory Committee for the College Board and served as a member of the Board of Directors for the Washington, D.C. based Triangle Coalition of Business, Government, and Education. He was a member of the NCTM Commission that released the landmark publication entitled Professional Standards for Teaching Mathematics and was a major author on the new teaching standards that NCTM released in 2007 under the title of Mathematics Teaching Today.
Dr. Speer is the primary author of the Wiley text, TODAY'S MATHEMATICS: Concepts, Classroom Methods and Instructional Activities, twelfth edition, focusing on content/teaching methods for the elementary and middle grades. Dr. Speer is currently the General Editor for the NCTM annual yearbooks covering the years 2011-13 and has authored numerous articles in various professional journals. He has served as editor of the IDEAS section for the Arithmetic Teacher journal and editor of the INVESTIGATIONS section of Teaching Children Mathematics journal. He has also served on the Editorial Board for the research journal, FOCUS on the Learning and Teaching of Mathematics (now known as INVESTIGATIONS in Mathematics Learning).
In addition to being the recipient of annual college and university-wide teaching, research, and service awards at both Bowling Green State University and UNLV, Dr. Speer has been recognized by his selection for the Christofferson-Fawcett Award for Lifetime Achievement in Mathematics Education and the George Mallinson Award for Distinguished Contributions to Mathematics and Science Education. Dr. Speer has lectured extensively throughout the United States and in 26 countries on six continents. Perhaps most importantly, Dr. Speer has classroom experience at each level and enjoys sharing and learning about how research informs teachers and how the classroom lends itself to generative studies of teaching/learning.

Throughout her years of service she has worked on many projects for the College ranging from Teacher Education and Certification to Assessment and Accreditation all the while serving as a pillar of strength that so many have come to rely on. CED earns 2009 International Association of Addiction and Offender Counselors Outstanding Program Award
The Department of Counselor Education at UNLV was just named the recipient of the 2009 International Association of Addiction and Offender Counselors Outstanding Program Award; IAAOC is a division of the American Counseling Association. This national recognition was bestowed upon the CED because the nomination committee reviewed nomination materials and found UNLV's program to be a model for other universities. Todd Lewis, IAAOC president, stated, "Your impressive Certificate in Addiction Studies program is high quality, and it is clear that the work you do in preparing students has had an enormous impact in your state and in the addictions field." The award was given to the faculty at the American Counseling Association conference in Charlotte.
Dr. Cross To Be Honored With The 2009 Social Justice Education Award
William E. Cross, Jr., Professor of Counselor Education in the College of Education, traveled to NYC on February 21st to receive the prestigious 2009 Social Justice Education Award that is presented each year at the Annual Teachers College Winter Roundtable on Cultural Psychology and Education. Previous winners have included Jane Elliot, Ronald Takaki, and Michelle Fine.

Dr. Cross Presents 2009 W. W. Law Lecture
William E. Cross, Jr., UNLV Professor of Counselor Education, presented the 2009 W. W. Law Lecture as part of the 20th Black Heritage Festival of Savannah, GA. W. W. Law (1923-2002) was a crusader for justice and the civil rights of African Americans. He served as president of the Savannah National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) chapter from 1950 to 1976 and came to be widely known as "Mr. Civil Rights." Dr. Cross spoke on "Black Identity After Obama." His lecture was given on Feb. 11th 2009 at the Jepson Center Auditorium of the Telfair Museum of Art and Culture and was co-sponsored by Georgia Southern University and the Telfair Museum.
Larry Ashley: 2009 UNLV Distinguished Teaching Award Recipient
Congratulations to Larry Ashley, Associate Faculty in Residence in Counselor Education, who just received word from Provost Michael Bowers that he received the 2009 UNLV Distinguished Teaching Award. Larry will be honored at the Academic Recognition Ceremony and Reception on Thursday, April 23, 2009 at 3:30 PM in the Ham Concert Hall Lobby. The award carries a $5,000.00 stipend.

Dr. Monica Lounsbery named a Fellow of the Research Consortium of the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance (AAHPERD). Attainment of Fellow status demonstrates an ongoing commitment to research and a high level of achievement in the field -- and is one of the most prestigious honors the Research Consortium can bestow on a member. Fellows are selected based on evidence of scholarship, including research presentations, and publications. The induction ceremony will occur April 2nd in Tampa, FL. Congratulations Dr. Lounsbery.

The College of Education would like to congratulate Drs. Virginia Usnick, Hasan Deniz, and Cyndi Giorgis each of whom were awarded Nevada Collaborative Teaching Improvement Program grants. What follows is a description of the grant from the NeCoTIP website: "The Nevada Collaborative Teaching Improvement Program (NeCoTIP) program is funded by the US Department of Education under the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001, and replaces the program formerly known as the Dwight D. Eisenhower Program for Professional Development. NeCoTIP proposals require partnerships between local school districts, faculty from a UCCSN College of Education, and faculty from a UCCSN College of Arts and Science. Equivalent departments in community colleges are also allowed as a partner. Non-Profit Organizations may be included in a proposal as an additional member of a partnership. These workshops will allow an opportunity for members of each group to meet and interact with each other, and thus begin to forge these partnerships."

On February 14, 2009 the Dr. William Cross Jr. Distinguished Lecture Series in Cross-Cultural Issues in Counseling and Education will be inaugurated as a part of the conference. Dr. James M. Congratulations to Dr. Jerry Hughes
The College of Education would like to congratulate Dr. Jerry Hughes who received recognition from USA Track and Field for his leadership and support of the education, training, and development of athletes and coaches in women's pole vaulting in the state of Nevada. Dr. Hughes has 17 years of experience as the Executive Director of the Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association, a non-profit organization which promotes and regulates high school athletics in the State of Nevada. Because he serves on several National Federation of State High School Association's committees, he has unique insight into accreditation and governance issues concerning interscholastic sports professionals. In his past year at UNLV, Dr. Hughes has developed graduate programming, including courses, in the area of interscholastic athletics administration to meet certification requirements of interscholastic athletic administrators, he has organized, and supervised graduate student internships in athletic administration and supervised masters student projects, as well as provided service to the profession through contributions at the local, state, and national level in addition to participation in service activities in the department, college, and university.

Nevada Money Matters Discussion
Dr. Monica Lounsbery featured in a Nevada Money Matters discussion on the current state of athletics in Clark County School District schools. Dr. Lounsbery is an Associate Professor and serves as Chair of the Department of Sports Education Leadership. Dr. Lounsbery's area of expertise is in physical education teacher education. Her research is concerned with the health and physical activity of school age children. Recent research efforts have examined physical activity opportunities for Nevada K-12 students during the school day.
Counselor Education Sweeps Regional Awards
The Counselor Education faculty, graduate students and program were recently recognized at the 2008 Association for Counselor Education and Supervision Conference in the Western Region garnering eight awards. Drs. Astramovich and Hoskins earned the coveted research award, for their research on "Doctoral Research Training of Counselor Education Faculty" which was published in the associations' flagship peer reviewed journal, Counselor Education & Supervision. Dr. Dale-Elizabeth Pehrsson earned the WACES Award for Outstanding Mentorship. Larry Ashley earned the WACES Special Recognition Award for his efforts in developing the first professional license for counselors in the state of Nevada, the new Clinical Professional Counselor (CPC) credential. WACES Social Justice Awards were bestowed upon both Drs. Jesse Brinson and Shannon Smith. Part time instructor, Dr. Katrina Harris earned the WACES Outstanding Graduate Student Award for her steadfast efforts on the WACES Newsletter and WACES Website Conversion Project. Finally, the 2008 WACES Innovative Counselor Education Program Award was garnered by the Counselor Education Department recognizing the department, faculty members, staff and students for all their excellence especially as this relates to social justice and multicultural initiatives.

The Department of Educational Psychology says thanks to Dr. Pamela Staples for 13 years of service to the department, the college, and the university community. Pamela Ann Staples has dedicated over thirty years to various types of human services. She has provided human resources consulting; career counseling; bereavement counseling, and most recently, supervision and instruction in school counseling. She completed an Ed. D. in Human Development at the George Washington University in 1998. In 1994 she was awarded an Ed. S. in Counseling; in 1993, an M.A. in Education and Development, also from the George Washington University. She has focused her scholarship on various aspects of development, career counseling, and school counseling practices. Dr. Staples is a National Certified Counselor and holds a State of Nevada School Counseling License. In her leisure, Pamela enjoys reading and writing poetry and watching movies with her family.

His areas of expertise include the social psychology of organization, organizational culture, organizational change and organizational development. Drs. Pierce, Higgins, and Sayeski awarded grants to improve special education programs

Candace Warkentin selected as August Classified Employee of the Month Award

Employee of the Month Award. Candace is just one of the many outstanding staff in the College of Education.
Dr. Paul Jones elected to Fellow status in the National Academy of Neuropsychology
Dr. Paul Jones, chair of the Educational Psychology department,
was recently elected to Fellow status in the National Academy of Neuropsychology, recognized for scientific contributions,
excellence in teaching and clinical practice, and professional leadership in clinical neuropsychology. Dr. Jones is a professor in educational psychology who joined
the UNLV faculty in 1987. He has published more than 70 articles in refereed professional journals. He authored a text for school counselors on use of the diagnostic
and statistical manual, is co-editor of a text for practicing counselors and therapists on enhancing clinical skills that was published in 2003, and co-authored a
text on research methods in 2005. His current research interests include the use of the Internet to deliver counseling and assessment services, applications of
single-case design/statistical analysis, and computer-assisted neuropsychological testing with particular attention to adaptations for persons with visual
disability.
Project KNOTtT: Helping People Transition to Teaching
Project KNOTtT (Kansas, Nevada, Ohio and Texas Transition to Teaching) is a consortium of colleges and universities in Kansas, Nevada, Ohio and Texas. UNLV is the only Nevada institution in this consortium. Dr. Martha Young is the Program Director at UNLV for Project KNOTtT. The program offered through UNLV is based on the grant requirements to prepare 15 "high needs" teachers in English language arts, math and science through alternative routes to licensure.

Congratulations to Dr. Monica Lounsbery
The Get Healthy Hero Award was presented to Dr. Monica Lounsbery on April 17th by the Southern Nevada Health District in recognition of her contributions to various projects undertaken by the Chronic Disease and Injury Prevention programs. Specifically, Dr. Lounsbery serves as a community expert consultant for the Get Healthy Clark County Community Challenge and is co-author of an edited guide book for K-12 school wellness programming. The guide book will be disseminated to all Nevada K-12 schools in the fall of 2008. Dr. Lounsbery will also chair an ad hoc committee of community health and school personnel to design and implement school wellness coordinator training of which, will be conducted statewide.

The American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education recently announced that the
premiere journal in the field, the
Journal of Teacher Education, will
be guided by an editorial team of UNLV researchers. The team will be led by editors-in-chief Sandra Odell, the chair of the Department of Curriculum & Instruction
and, M. Christopher Brown the dean of the College of Education. The editorial team includes Curriculum & Instruction faculty
members Elizabeth Spalding, Jian Wang, Cari Klecka and Emily Lin.
Congratulations to Dr. Carl Steinhoff
Dr. Carl Steinhoff received the "Paul Harris Fellow"
award from Rotary Club of Las Vegas. This award is among the most prestigious presented to individuals who have made significant contributions to the life of the Las Vegas
Community. In addition to his stellar academic record, Dr. Steinhoff has a long record community service. "He was a volunteer fireman in New York State, he has served in
the Nevada Civil Air Patrol since 1989 and as a senior Mission Pilot, he has logged over 244 missions and been involved in 20 life saving events. He served as Squadron
Commander, Chief of Staff of the Nevada Wing and most recently, as Vice Wing Commander. Dr. Steinhoff and his wife Ellen, a former school librarian, have been married
for 47 years. They have two sons, both practicing attorneys in Las Vegas." Quoted from remarks by Dr. Steinhoff's friend for 39 years, Dr. Patrick Carlton.

Improving the
teaching and learning of science and math in Las Vegas Valley middle schools is the goal of a new $860,000 grant awarded by the Nevada State Department of Education to
the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) and the Clark County School District (CCSD). The grant will fund a new three-year project, titled "Project MIST" (an acronym for
Mathematics Integrated with Science Using Technology).
"Project MIST attempts to capitalize on the important role that classroom teachers play in the intellectual development of students by further developing their understanding
of science and science teaching," said Kent Crippen, UNLV associate professor of curriculum and instruction. "The project does that by engaging teachers in the process of
developing and using research to better understand their students, curriculum, and instructional practices."

Dr. Horsford has been named AERA's
Division A Dissertation of the Year award winner. Her dissertation, "Vestiges of Desegregation: Black Superintendent Reflections on the Complex Legacy of Brown v.
Board of Education" was also the 2007 UNLV College of Education Dissertation of the Year. Her committee included Dr. Edith Rusch (chair), Dr. Robert McCord, Dr.
James Crawford, Dr. Helen Harper and Dr. Laurence Parker (University of Illinois). Sonya will be honored at the Division A Business meeting, Monday, March 24
(6:15-7:45 pm) at the Hilton NY, Sutton Complex, Beekman Parlour.

SOAP is a winner!
The UNLV Student Organization of Addictions Professionals (SOAP) just won the NAADAC's Emerging Advocates of the Year Award. This completes a
sweep of the Triple Crown of NAADAC, the country's leading organization of addiction professionals, Awards for UNLV. In 2004, we won the Organization Achievement Award becoming the first
University and non treatment or Medical School program to win the top programming award. In 2007 I won the Mel Schulstad Award, the top individual, Award and now in 2008 SOAP wins the
Emerging Advocates of the Year Award. UNLV in a class of its own relative to the preparation of addiction professionals.
The COE First Annual Golf Tournament set for August 29, 2008 at TPC Las Vegas. The tournament will support scholarships for the Troops To Teachers Program.

Dr. Jerry Hughes will be inducted into the Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association Hall of Fame for his contributions to high school athletics in the

The nation's largest association of addiction professionals recently named UNLV professor Larry Ashley the recipient of the Mel Schulstad Professional of the Year award. Each year NAADAC, the Association for Addiction Professionals, recognizes excellence in the addictions profession, and the Mel Schulstad award, named after the first president of NAADAC, is among the most significant in the industry.
Two proposals receive Institutional Development Grants
A. Institute for Multicultural Education and Diversity Training
This institute will provide consultation, training, education, and organizational development services on issues of diversity and inclusion, broadly considered. The institute will develop and disseminate cutting-edge professional development initiatives and related resources for UNLV faculty, staff, and students, as well as PK-16 faculty, staff, and students in the greater Las Vegas community.

B. Research Center for the Study of Race, Class, and Social Justice
This center will prioritize research that focuses inquiry and analysis at the intersection of race and class and locates it in a social justice context. The center will help researchers across campus develop and sustain highly collaborative, cutting-edge research initiatives, and disseminate the results of this work through traditional scholarship and presentation venues, as well as through an array of non-traditional, highly innovative, and more accessible vehicles in order to broaden the basis of who has access to and, thus, can directly benefit from it.

The College of Education is honored to host the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum's 2007 West Regional Education Summit, "Exploring the Future of Holocaust Education." The Summit will be held at the University of Nevada at Las Vegas on February 20 - 22, 2008. Dr. Jesus Garcia and Dr. Greg Levitt are organizing the event for UNLV. Dr. Saddler in Educational Administration recently received $2.146 million dollars in grants from the U.S. Dept. of Homeland Security for Frontline Responder programs.
The Frontline Responder Train the Trainer Course is a 2-day training course providing an overview of terrorism awareness; facilitated seminars in defining the threat, identifying
the potential targets of the terrorist, terrorist options in delivering an attack, and the Homeland Security role of the security professional.For more information please contact

Tom Pierce and Jeff Gelfer, Department of Special Education received a $26 million dollar grant for "The Nevada Child Care Subsidy Program" for 2006 thru 2010. UNLV Professor, Larry Ashley was appointed by the Governor to the Committee on Co-Ocurring Disorders as the representative of Higher Education. His term will be from January 7,2008 to October 1,2010. Dr. Ashley will be on the Workforce Subcommittee.
UNLV Professor, Patricia Markos has been asked to participate in the Mental Health Working Group that Assemblywoman Sheila Leslie is forming. This working group is being formed to discuss the possible redesign of mental health services in Clark County.
College faculty receive Research Infrastructure Award
John Filler (PI) Catherine Lyons (Co-PI) & Greg Levitt (Co-PI) received a President's Research Infrastructure Grant for their proposal, "Digital Audio/Visual Remote recording of Complex Social Interactions Among Teachers and Children with and Without Disabilities." The proposal was funded for $99,000.
The proposal is for digital equipment that will enable researchers from various disciplines across campus to record and store, with reliability and fidelity, the complex interactions that occur between preschool age children with and without disabilities in a natural classroom setting. It will enable our UNLV researchers to capture digitized audio and visual records of complex micro-molecular strands of both verbal and non-verbal forms of the behavior of adults and young children. Doing so will allow us to isolate the variables that may ultimately be shown to account for reoccurring patterns and eventually lead to the identification of functional relationships among behaviors. The Lynn Bennett Early Childhood Center will be setting for the research.
