Mission Statement
Our mission at Petersen Professional Development School is to work together as a community of learners to increase academic growth and enhance positive social development.
Celebrations
-
Tutorial Programs - Students received extra assistance from teachers, UNLV students and volunteers to improve their academic skills.

Honor Choir - A fourth/fifth grade choir was established.

Art Club - Students met weekly to pursue interests in art.

News Anchors - Student anchors telecast school news and activities school-wide.

Storytelling Festival - Students participated in a district-wide initiative to promote storytelling.

Jump Rope for Heart Team - Students participated in an after-school Jump Rope Team and performed at other schools.
Goals
Goal 1: Implement Professional Learning Communities
Progress Toward Goal 1:

Provided teachers with video presentations of Richard DuFour's Professional Learning Communities

Structured weekly planning meetings with grade levels with a focus on increasing student achievement

Provided planning time for teachers to work in collaboration with other grade levels

Worked closely with UNLV to provide consistency in building Professional Learning Communities
Goal 2: Focus instruction on Literacy

Developed school-wide reading assessments for K - 5

Modeled effective reading instruction in all classrooms

Provided staff development on effective vocabulary strategies, Words Their Way, and reading interventions

Provided tutoring on a daily basis to students not proficient in reading

Implemented Critical Friends Group to look at student work through the Regional Professional Development Program (RPDP)
Goal 3: Analyze Iowa Tests of Basic Skills results then plan strategies to improve vocabulary/reading achievement

Reviewed Iowa Test of Basic Skills with entire staff, noting deficiencies related to vocabulary

Utilized test results to write School Improvement Plan for 2004 - 2005

Implemented school-wide vocabulary strategies

Implemented, in third and fourth grades, small reading group instruction by literacy specialist.
