Physical Education Activity Courses

Note: All Physical Education Activity classes have an equipment fee of $10.00 each, with the exception of:

PEX 100 ARCHERY
This course covers the fundamentals of archery, including: aiming, release, scoring, terminology, historical knowledge, appreciation for, and sporting opportunities in archery. The class meets at Pacific Archery Sales; 4084 Schiff (367-1505)

PEX 105 BOWLING
This skill course introduces students to the lifetime activity of bowling. This will be a fundamental course, teaching the basics of the game from scoring to the actual playing. Students will receive individual and group instruction. They will also bowl (3) three games each session. There is a minimal charge for the lines and shoes for students of this class.

PEX 107 GOLF
Beginning instruction on techniques for putting, chipping, pitching, iron swing, and wood strokes. Course includes covering the rules and etiquette of golf along with a focus on mental aspects. The class will use the facilities at the Callaway Golf Center ; 6730 Las Vegas Blvd. South . $40.00 class fee required .$7.50 to play the course

PEX 107A GOLF (Intermediate)
Prerequisite: PEX 107 Provides the students with a more in-depth look at the game of golf. Focusing more on the short game, course management, and the technical aspects of the swing. Fee structure the same as PEX 107.

PEX 111 JOGGING
This aerobic course is designed to expose students to the physical fitness activity of jogging. It is not intended to be a marathon training course, but rather a course to encourage students to take part in a physical fitness program. Focuses on improving cardiovascular fitness and wellness through jogging programs are emphasized.

PEX 112B SELF DEFENSE JUDO
Students will learn to use Judo for self defence, throwing and falling techniques, pinning techniques, locking techniques, choking techniques, and some Japanese terminology. The fundamental skills of kicking, punching, grappling, ground techniques, throwing, chokes, and arm locks will be covered The art of Judo teaches balance, coordination, timing and most importantly, respect for other people. 

PEX 113 TAE KWON DO
Come and learn about Sport Tae kwon do, one of two martial arts included as an official Olympic sport in the 2000 Olympics. Basic kicking techniques used in Sport Tae kwon do competition are taught, as well as traditional forms and stances. Class is dynamic and upbeat, and students will get a good workout." This class is for beginning students. The class will also cover the fundamentals of Self Defense along with a medium level of cardiovascular workouts. Students will learn; Self Defense, kicks, hand strikes, blocks, stances, tecqeuk (forms) 1 & 2, one-steps, strength, balance, coordination, flexibility, awareness, and self confidence.

PEX 113B TAE KWON DO (Intermediate)
Prerequisite: PEX 113 Advanced kicking techniques used in Sport Tae kwon do competition are taught, as well as traditional forms and stances. Class is dynamic and upbeat, and students will get a good workout. The student begins to work towards and achievement of forms, specialty movements, sparing, and training for sports competition. Students will have the opportunity to obtain rank (belts) promotion through the World Tae Kwon Do Federation.

PEX 114 SELF DEFENSE
This course is designed to aid students in developing rudimentary skills in self-defense. Upon completion, students should be able to demonstrate basic self-defense techniques of a physical and non-physical nature. The UNLV Self-Defense Class teaches practical methods of self-defense drawn from all the martial arts. Students will have an opportunity to learn basic street self defense with an emphasis on increased awarness and self confidence

PEX 115 AIKIDO (Beginning)
Introduces the martial art of Aikido. It deals with physical confrontation in a controlled non- violent way. Emphasis is on low impact defensive movements and falling without injury. Aikido originated in the centuries-old tradition of the Japanese martial arts and is a form of budo-- a way of life that seeks to polish the self through a blend of rigorous physical training and spiritual discipline.

PEX 115B AIKIDO ( Intermediate)
Prerequisite: PEX 115. This class expands the basics to deal with more dynamic and realistic situations Some weapons are used in practice.

PEX 116A SCUBA DIVING (Beginning)
Prerequisite: Good health and the ability to pass the basic swim test: A 200-meter surface swim, a 15-meter underwater swim, and a 10-minute tread water exercise. Equipment required : Mask, snorkel, fins, boots. Equipment supplied : Air cylinders, buoyancy compensator, weight belt, wet suit, hood. Certification : An international card will be issued upon the successful completion of all classroom, pool, and lake training. Field trip : Students must attend two days of diving in open water at Lake Mead in order to be certified. 2 credits

PEX 116B SCUBA DIVING (Advanced)
Prerequisite: PEX 116A or a scuba certification - 2 credits. Equipment required : Mask, snorkel, fins, boots, gloves, dive log, dive tables, and underwater flashlight. Equipment supplied : Tanks, regulator, buoyancy compensator, weight belt, weights, and wet suit. Certification : An international advanced scuba diver card will be issued through NAUI upon completion of the class requirements. Field trip : (1) One trip to San Diego , California . Transportation and lodging is the student's responsibility, plus a $20 trip fee. (2) Two field trips to Lake Mead plus one bonus trip to Lake Mead . No extra charges for Lake Mead .

PEX 120A SWIMMING (Beginning)
Beginning students with no swimming skills will learn basic stroke techniques and water survival. Others will be able to learn additional basic swimming strokes and work on stroke improvement for strokes already known, or if you just want to work out for competition or better health, you will receive benefits from this course.

PEX 120B SWIMMING (Intermediate)
Prerequisite: PEX 120A. See PEX 120A for description.

PEX 120E LIFEGUARD TRAINING
Prerequisite:. (1) Must be able to swim 500 yards non-stop, demonstrate the freestyle, breast, and side strokes, (2) recover a 10-pound object from the bottom of the pool, and (3) tread water for two minutes using legs only. This class is designed to give students the skills necessary for swimming pool lifeguard jobs. Students will learn advanced CPR and basic first aid skills as well as life saving techniques.

PEX 122A TENNIS (Beginning)
This skill course introduces students to the lifetime activity of tennis. This will be a fundamental course, teaching the basics of the game from scoring to the actual playing. This class covers the basic fundamentals of tennis techniques, rules, equipment, and a general knowledge base to broaden the student's appreciation and enjoyment of the game.

PEX 122B TENNIS (Intermediate/Advanced)
Prerequisite: PEX 122A. This class focuses on more aggressive playing ability. Students develop more dependable strokes, with directional intent, depth, and pace with both forehand and backhand. Students begin to master the use of power, spins, lobs, overheads, and serves with more power and accuracy.

PEX 123 RACQUETBALL
This course is an introductory course designed to provide basic skills, techniques, and strategies of racquetball. The focus is on learning the game, rules, safety, and sportsmanship. The course will also cover rules for singles and doubles play and provide students with lots of time for game and tournament play.

PEX 127 WATER AEROBICS
Focuses on improving cardiovascular endurance, muscle tone, and flexibility by doing a series of exercises in the water.

PEX 128 LOW BACK CARE THROUGH GENTLE YOGA
This class incorporates gentle yoga for the health of the lower back, body mechanics as they apply to daily living habits: posture, proper breathing, relaxation techniques, and stretching.

PEX 130 STEP AEROBICS
This course introduces the fundamentals of step aerobics. Emphasis is placed on basic stepping up and down on an adjustable platform; cardiovascular fitness; and upper body, floor, and abdominal exercises. Upon completion, students should be able to participate in basic step aerobics.

PEX 132 WEIGHT TRAINING
Teaches students proper techniques of lifting and spotting. Provides information for putting together individual workout programs. Course is taught as a lifetime activity as an integral part of overall fitness. Proper gym etiquette is taught and expected.

PEX 134 T'AI CHI CH'UAN
A beginning course consisting of 17 postures (of 37 total) of the Cheng, Man Ch'ing short forms of the Yang style. This is Part I of three sections. T'ai Chi Ch'uan is for the cultivation of the mind, body, and spirit.

PEX 134B HATHA YOGA (Beginning)
Provides students with a program of Hatha Yoga asanas, pranayama, and relaxation techniques. Through daily practice, some of the benefits of yoga include increases flexibility of body and mind, increased muscle tone, strength, balance and coordination, energy, decreased stress, and the ability to relax deeply.

PEX 134C HATHA YOGA (Intermediate)
Prerequisite: PEX 134B. Emphasis on in-depth exploration of yoga asanas and their relationship to chakras. Students will work on maintaining asanas for expended periods of time as well as extensive work with pranayama.

PEX 136X TAE BO
Discover America 's favorite cardiovascular activity. Tae bo is a unique blend of Tae Kwon Do, aerobics, boxing, and music. Provides fun, cardiovascular, and general conditioning work.

PEX 143 ROCK CLIMBING (Beginning)
Introduction to rock climbing is designed to provide the basic principles, methods, and techniques of rock climbing.

PEX 143A ROCK CLIMBING (Intermediate)
Prerequisite: PEX 143. Designed to build on the skills of PEX 143. Expanding into the advanced techniques of lead and outdoor sport climbing.

PEX 147 SOCCER
This course will introduce you to the basic and intermediate skills of soccer, including passing, dribbling, feinting, shooting, juggling, collecting, and positional play. Small-sided games will be practiced to incorporate these skills to lead up to game play.

PEX 148A VOLLEYBALL (Beginning)
This skill course introduces students to the lifetime activity of volleyball. This will be a fundamental course, teaching the basics of the game from scoring to the actual playing. This course will also cover volleyball etiquette. The class will play two on two, three on three, and standard volleyball.

PEX 148B VOLLEYBALL (Advanced)
Prerequisite: PEX 148A. Some playing experience and knowledge of the game is necessary. The course will focus on improving fundamental skills and playing strategies.

PEX 165 AEROBIC CONDITIONING
Designed to help students develop a healthy cardiovascular system and general wellness. A variety of methods such as walking, jogging, running, cycling etc. are used. Flexibility and strengthening programs are also included.

PEX 184 FENCING (Beginning)
Instruction in basic skills for fencing. Positioning, footwork, offensive and defensive skills, and directing and judging of a fencing bout. Upon completion of this course a student should be able to demonstrate a working knowledge of fencing history and terminology, perform basic skills of foil fencing in context of fencing bout and officiate a fencing bout as a judge or director and be able to apply the rules and ethics of fencing from this perspective.

PEX 184B FENCING (Intermediate/Advanced)
Prerequisite: PEX 184. Covers more advanced techniques of attack, defense, and retaliation, counter-attacks, deception, and bouts. Also covers fencing competitions.

PEX 195-1 Fundamentals of Basketball
This class is designed to give students the opportunity to learn the rules, fundamental skills, history and strategies of basketball. The class will provide for students with varying skills, knowledge and backgrounds. Students will have an opportunity to practice the skills and fundamentals through instruction , play and competition.

PEX 195-2 Chinese Kung Fu
This class is designed to teach the students the Tibetan Lama style of Kung Fu. This style was taught to the Emperial Gaurds of China 500 years ago. The emphasis of the style is based on all ranges of defense and offensive fighting, specifically kicking and hand techniques.

PEX 195-3 Women's Kick Boxing
This class is designed to help women develop self confidence, improvement of their upper body strength, and toning their buttocks, thighs and abdominals. This is achieved through impact training, target striking, and total body conditioning.

PEX 195-6 Latin Dancing
This class introduces the student to Latin dances, Salsa, Cha Cha, and Merengue. The class will raise the students awarness of social dance forms as important and stimulating outlets for personaland cultural expressions.
